What to pack for a Swiss ski holiday with kids

Skis, boots, poles and helmets can all be hired in the resort, and with children who grow a size a year that is usually the better deal. What you do need to bring is warm layers, the documents, and a few Swiss specifics. Tick through this list a week before you leave.

The list

Ski clothes, per child

  • Waterproof ski jacket and salopettes
  • Two thermal base layers
  • Fleece or thin down mid-layer
  • Ski socks, one pair per day (not cotton)
  • Waterproof mittens, plus a spare pair
  • Neck tube and a thin helmet liner or hat
  • Goggles and sunglasses

Rent in the resort

  • Skis, boots and poles: shops swap sizes on the spot
  • Helmet, if your child doesn't have one that fits
  • Sledge: hire points sit at most lift stations
  • Back protector for older children in snow parks

Documents and money

  • Passports, valid for the whole trip
  • Travel insurance that covers winter sports and mountain rescue
  • GHIC or EHIC, if you're eligible: see the NHS guidance
  • Swiss francs or a card with no foreign fees: Switzerland uses CHF, not euros
  • Swiss Family Card if you travel on a Swiss Travel Pass: children 6–15 travel free with a parent

  • Sun cream SPF 50 and lip balm
  • Children's paracetamol and plasters
  • Refillable water bottles
  • Slippers or indoor shoes for the hotel
  • Swimming costumes, if the hotel has a pool

For the journey

  • Ski clothes for the youngest worn on the day, if the bag is tight
