First ski holiday with a toddler: what to know in Switzerland

Most Swiss ski schools take children in groups from 3 or 4. Younger than that, a toddler's ski holiday is childcare, sledging and ten minutes on a magic carpet, and the hotel matters more than the resort. These are the ages, places and questions that decide whether the week works.

Youngest age for ski school, by resort

From each ski school's own pages. A ski kindergarten mixes play and skiing in a fenced snow garden; group lessons are for children who can already stand on skis for a morning.

Under three: childcare, not ski school

None of the ski schools above publishes a starting age below 3. If both parents want to ski, look for a hotel with its own childcare. In our listings: the Schweizerhof in Lenzerheide takes children from 2, free, seven days a week; the Walliserhof in Saas-Fee from 2 in the late afternoon and evening; the Kinderhort at the Laax valley station from age 1 for rocksresort, signinahotel and Riders Hotel guests.

Book childcare when you book the room, and ask for the winter hours in writing: several hotels only publish their summer timetable.

Planning the first days

  1. 1

Pick a hotel close to the nursery slope

Carrying skis and a toddler for 15 minutes each way ends most mornings before they start. Zermatt's Wolli's park sits at Sunnegga, Saas-Fee's Kinderland at Kalbermatten, and Arosa has Berry Land in Innerarosa and Honeyland at Prätschli.

  2. 2

    Book half days

A three- or four-year-old who skis two hours in the morning and naps in the afternoon will want to go back the next day. A full day with lunch supervision suits five-year-olds better; Zermatt, Arosa and Villars offer it.

  3. 3

Hire skis and boots in the resort

Small feet change sizes between winters, and a shop can swap boots on day two. Bring a helmet only if your child already has one that fits.

  4. 4

    Plan one day off

A day of sledging, swimming or a train ride up the mountain keeps the week fun. Many family hotels have a pool; see hotels with a pool.

Toddler extras to pack

On the slope

  • Ski mittens on a string, plus a spare pair
  • Neck tube rather than a scarf
  • Sun cream and sunglasses: snow reflects strong light at altitude
  • A small snack in an easy pocket

In the room

  • Night light and the usual sleep toy
  • Ask the hotel for a cot and a stair gate
  • Nappy bags and wipes for the week: shops close early on 24 December
  • Thermometer and children's paracetamol

Hotels for babies and toddlers

Hotels with childcare for under-threes, a kids' club that takes two-year-olds, or cots plus babysitting.
